The Vietnam Service Medal was awarded to all members of the Armed Forces of the United States, serving at any time between 4 July 1965 and 28 March 1973, in the area defined under the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM) for Vietnam.

The colors of the ribbon represent the flag of the Republic of Vietnam which was, at the time, yellow with red stripes running horizontally. The red stripes indicate the three ancient empires of Vietnam Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China, mirroring the Republic of Vietnam’s flag. The green represents the Vietnamese jungles.
